The Sound of Silence

Today I'll use this blog in order to talk about a topic that's not so nice. However, it's easier to deal with difficult things when saying them out loud, rather than trying to hide them.

In the last couple of months I've had plenty of time to think about my life and myself as a person. Meanwhile, it occurred to me that I've changed a lot in the last 30 (yeah, really) years.

I was a very curious, cheerful and talkative child, would ask hundreds of question each day and would talk as much as ten people would in the same time. I'd try to be in the center of attention and if I wasn't, I'd make sure to push myself through the crowd and let them all know that I was there as well. I've never wondered about if the things that came out of my mouth would be wrong in any way.

Today, it's much harder not to recognize me, but I wish that I wasn't as noticeable as I am.What i've learned in the last 30 years is that you absolutely should fit in the scheme and shouldn't try to stick out. And while you're supposed to be quiet, sit in your chair and follow your teachers instructions as a student, you're supposed to be the exact opposite of that as a grown-up. You're supposed to be able to engage in small-talk, to network, to hold presentations and to be likeable.

So now, I'm not doing it right all over again. I don't interrupt people when they talk and reconsider what I want to say until it's too late to say it. I would rather not be caught saying something stupid or wrong. And I have far from enough contacts, which are so vital for my job aspiration. But it's really difficult for me to not let a conversation die out, because I can't talk the way I used to talk, unaware of possible repercussions and 100% honest.

However, I am sure that I'd be a good friend, even though or maybe even because I am a very good listener and I'd be a valueable employee, because I do my job the way it's supposed to be done and fast as well (and creative, detail- and goal-oriented). But I'm no longer able to stand in the limelight, because I have always been told that it is wrong. And I can't be proud of myself, because everything I was has always been wrong and because I didn't fit in the scheme of the much preferred silent and obeying student.

If there is one thing that school has taught me, then that it is an advantage not to ask too many questions and to do as you are told. And if there is one thing life has taught me, then that you shouldn't be yourself for as long as you are unable to shine as a flawless and successful human being.

I'm not advocating that we should never think about what exactly it is that we are saying, but sometimes we're just supposed to say something without thinking it all through for too long. If we don't do that, it'll often be too late to say it. Also, it would often be better if we had the possibility to just state the truth, even if it hurts. Instead of that, we swallow it all down and act out a role as perfect humans.

I may not be the worst actor there is, but I don't enjoy acting out my own life. If you find me at the gym, I'm in a role as somebody who enjoys this, even though I really don't. While trying to find a job, I have to stay in character, even though I really am somebody else. I really feel no pleasure in trying to cover up all my flaws and in covering up those horrible parts that are a part of my life and therefore, a part of me. But this is exactly what I have to do, if I want to find a job.

Nobody, absolutely nobody will write about their extensive experiences with therapy, their psychologic diseases, the fact that they've been a victim of a horrible crime or simply that they've been bullied throughout their time in school in their CV or their cover letter, even though some of these things would easily explain why there are holes in the CV or why some of the candidate's grades aren't the best. The fact that all these perceived flaws have to be covered up is often the first step into a web of lies.

I've never been particularly good at lying, but I have to lie while trying to get a job. I'll have to be a person I'm not, or not anymore, even though I wish that we'd all be able to accept that none of us are completely flawless.

The person who may look flawless based on their grade papers and the first impression can be the person who wont do a good job. If your grades are all A+, you might not have had enough chances to socialize. If your grade paper is at best showing a mediocre performance in school, this might indicate that you, in fact, are rather good at socializing, but didn't have enough time to focus on all subjects, and if your grades show that you performed poorly, this may simply indicate that life dealt you lemons from day one.

In other words, grade papers and job interviews that may last between 30 and 60 minutes are not an indicator of your ability as an employee. They may be an indicator of the fact that your day had already started either good or bad though, but that is all there is to it.

It would make a lot more sense to test possible employees and let them work in your business to figure out whether or not they'll fit in. Whenever I got the chance to do exactly that, I usually figured out that I actually am a valueable employee, contrary to my own beliefs and contrary to my mediocre grade papers.

This way, I also found out that I am too much of a perfectionist and that I simply don't engage enough in small talk. I'll have to work on this and I know that it wont be easy to return to my old self, but it is necessary, if I want to live a more or less normal life. Sure, I'll risk that some people will no longer like me, but I guess that is the price I'll have to pay to be true to myself. I can't please everyone.

Just say yes....

Liebe ist, was zählt.

I'm getting married in about a week. I haven't really thought anything through yet and I really don't know what's going to change. As far as I am aware, not even my name changes. It is too complicated to do it now and will be much easier later on. Even if you are planning to have a very laidback and small wedding, there are many things that need to be thought through and considered.

Our plan for the ceremony looks a bit like a game plan in football. The bride's father is the first to play the ball, but ends up on the substitute's bench. The new player will be the groom. Once there is a ring on the finger, the groom has won. You can expect a laola while the couple is kissing.

But all joking aside, I've been watching a myriad of romcoms lately, and it all comes down to the fact that the most important thing about weddings and a relationship is that the couple loves one another, no matter what. Expensive cars, travelling to exotic places, having a house or whathever the world let's you know you are supposed to do or to have - all of that doesn't matter, as long as you are in love. You can look at social media and doubt it. But love includes days on which you really don't like your partner, on which you fight and on which you don't agree. These are the things, people don't like to show, but they are there nevertheless. And everyone experiences this.

We are at a point in our life, where everything is going wrong. We have no jobs, we don't have that house that you apparently are supposed to have when you're getting married in Denmark, we don't even have a car and we don't have a child - other people would claim this is a low. But we have eachother, we are healthy and we have love.

This love is more important than the biggest wedding, the most expensive things and that everything goes right in life. This is essential, but often something that we tend to forget, when we see that everybody seems to lead a better life than we do (on social media). I believe it is important to not forget the essential parts of life that make it worth living. The essential part of life is that you can live it on this planet, with people you love, who help you to learn more about life and who are with you, while you enjoy your time here.

Love is, what is important.

The "Glamor" of Being Unemployed

It's early in the afternoon. I'm slowly getting up. I'm trying to talk myself into looking out of the window. I'm thinking: "Why am I even doing this?" This is how a typical day in the life on an unemloyed person starts and it takes place between a bed and a couch. Even if you are the most enthusiastic person there is in this world, the evil monster of unemployment is going to eat you alive one day.

The jobcenter keeps telling you that "it'll all be fine" and that "all it takes" is an internship and a job with some extra money by the jocenter thereafter. If you are lucky, that is. Eventually, you are one of those, who end up disappearing from the statistics after two years of unemployment.

I don't want to paint the devil on the wall, but it is really difficult to hold your head up high, if all you meet is people who have a lack of understanding of your situation. "But everybody says that there is a lack of engineers!" While that may be true, it is also true that those who recently graduated lack the 5-10 years of experience which they demand for almost all jobs (okay, it is more like 2-5, but exaggeration helps to show how ridiculous this is). "It's your own fault, you are not willing to move to the countryside and want to stay in a big city." There are no jobs for software engineers in the coutnryside. I'm not even going to mention my situation as a humanist, but this describes the accusations my boyfriend has to live with. "If only you would have wanted to become something more proper than a humanist" is ringing in my ears ever since before i even started studying.

When you are unemployed, they still expect a lot from you. The days between bed and couch are filled with applications. If i would have luck everytime that somebody wished me "Good luck" with my job search, I should have won the lottery 5 times by now. Or, I should at least have had a jobinterview. Many people believe that all we (the unemployed) do is to sit at home, having a good time, because we can't show them how tedious and difficult it is to go through all of this and to not lose your mind along the way. On top of that, you're going from workshop to workshop in hopes of finding a "better you". Most of the times, you'll briefly feel like it's your turn now - only to return to your couch again later. But why is that the case?

The young generation (mine) is facing many obstacles in their lives. A demanding economy makes sure that people need to work longer and longer, in an order to minimize the costs of a constantly aging populace. While focussing on that, politicians generally oversee that the younger generations are experiencing more difficulties when trying to join the work force. Depression and a constant fear of not being able to make it define a young generation, which thus can end up without the slightest spark or power left to even be able to join the work force. This is how you make sure that potential workers will never become those. In other words: The money that you thought you'd save on pension spendings will directly go to those, who will no longer be able to become part of the work force. I would be willing to say that this is not how you save money, but this is how you lose in the long run.

On top of that, it becomes very unlikely that people with no job will choose to have children. If you want your populace to stop declining, you need to give them favorable circumstances instead of trying to make their life harder. But politicians aren't generally known to be those who think ahead of their 4-5 years in the parliament. If somebody would have thought ahead during the Bologna process, they could have figured out that the job market needs a longer phase in order to be able to adapt to the students, which seemingly "don't know what they are doing and have no experience". If your Bachelor is not enough and companies require a Master, it can at times seem a little off, because if you, like me, have experieced that a Master just means two more years of basically the same thing with the only exception being the finals which, admittedly, are tougher, then you begin to think that companies really have no idea what the studies are all about and that they just want you to have a prestigious title. And then there is the age issue which does not get better by studying two years longer. At 26-30, women are at their best age to have children which makes them rather unattractive for the job market as well. So no matter how you do it, you are bound to do it wrong. The older generations are done with children and have the necessary experience, which makes them more attractive than you in every respect.

But if you show a couple of glamorous pictures on the jobcenter homepage, then everybody is going to believe that they will find a job in relatively little time. This is why we are desperately trying to create the world's best CV and cover letter which is so "new" and "creative", in order to blow the employer's mind and why we are writing exciting recounts of us as THE best employee ever, for all of that to end up in the paper bin, time and time again. Because we are not the perfect super candidate the company is looking for and thus, they act like there wouldn't be any suitable candidates at all.

Somebody in my last job class suggested that we should have more time for mindfulness. I, for my part, are satisfied with the free coffee that saves me from wasting the money that I, in the eyes of many, are not even supposed to get for being such a lazy bugger, on a Starbucks coffee that I couldn't even afford anyway.

Money also makes sure that they can bash us for another reason, namely, that we are not trying to get that one job at the end of the world that's waiting for us. It is because most of us don't even have a car and it gets really difficult to drive four hours every day, while you are, for example, supposed to pick up your child from the Kindergarten while having a 9-5 job. Unless you want to borrow a lot of money from your parents, it will take a while until you have the funds to buy that car. This is why these jobs, if they even were there, would be more or less unattractive.

At least most of us here do not live with our parents any longer. In Japan, this is the exact opposite. A recent article on "asienspiegel.ch" stated that as much as 4,5 million japanese people from 35-54 live with their parents and are called "parasite-singles". This term includes that the general population believes that these people are simply too lazy to make do themselves and negates the fact that more and more jobs don't offer enough payment to make do, or that it gets more and more difficult to even find a fitting position. If we don't pay attention, Japan could be a look into our future, and yes, this would include that we also are facing even fewer newborns in the future. But politicians are only willing to point at our direction while they, at the same time, have at least three fingers that point towards them. They are not trying to figure out what the reason for the problems is, they are only interested in trying to find someone to blame for the misery.

The older generations often asks us: "Why don't the youngsters protest?" And the younger generations will have to answer that they are too tired and have learned nothing else than blind obedience from day one. However, the older generations are not going to believe that, because they know that we are at fault, because we simply are too lazy. So it should be the older generations that should protest, because they have to work longer, but all you hear from them is that it is fine and that they would have been bored at home anyway, or they don't complain, because all is fine as long as you have the money, albeit not realizing that they would benefit from not making sure that we will have to rely on them for a lot longer than they had expected when they gave birth to us. This way, they also give us a chance to make the grandchildren they keep asking for, while not realizing that we would rather not have children, when we have nothing to offer and can't give them a somewhat secure life.

So I'll put on my "business-casual" suit, go to the next meeting, get my hopes up just to end up on my loser couch again. But at least I can call this couch my own. In Japan, I'd be sitting on mommy's and daddy's couch.

Work work work work work work...

Niemand sagt gern wiederholt: "Was haben Sie gesagt?"

As some of you may know, my boyfriend and I are both looking for a job. Here in Denmark, you are expected to accept jobs which can be located up to two hours away from your home. In two hours, I'm able to travel to the North Sea, but I live next to the Baltic Sea. I could also make it to the German-Danish border, so you get an idea of the size of the area this includes.

Admittedly, it would probably be easier for me to get a job closer to the westcoast than here. Aarhus is a city and the places on the westcoast are mostly not even close to a cities' size, but the area is more tourist oriented and in particular often frequented by Germans. Thus, the fact that I speak German is a definite plus over there.

I have a Master's degree in English and i am trying to get a job in the PR/communication sector. This is the area of work I am most familiar with as I have worked in a PR agency back in Germany. My boyfriend is a Software Engineer. He has had job interviews while I am usually getting the standard "no". At the moment, I am participating in a career coaching class. I don't know if it's going to help me, but it's a class that I have to visit as it's demanded by the job center. If you want to receive "Dagpenge" - unemployment support - you are supposed to visit classes hosted by the job center and the agency that pays your Dagpenge, called "A-Kasse". You will also have to write a couple of applications per week and stay in contact to your A-Kasse/Jobcenter by going there once a month.

It's not an issue at all, but I'm expecting that the job search could eventually become more and more difficult on an emotional level while time flies by. Frederik and I are in group 1 and 2 of those students in Denmark who take the longest to find their first job (as seen in the newspaper "Politiken"). We have up to two years to find a job, after that, we'll be paid a lot less (Kontanthjælp). So there will be more and more pressure on us and there'll definitely be more potential for conflict. The fact that we see each other pretty much 24/7 does not help this either. However, one should never give up hope.

In Denmark, they'll always let you know that the best way to find a job is through the telephone. I find this a bit impractical for my generation as we are used to other methods. Don't get me wrong, the phone is not the enemy, but it makes it more difficult to get a clue about what the other person is thinking, feeling, in general, how the other person reacts to the things you are saying. That can be particularly difficult in the job search situation and it can cause misunderstandings. I've had a phone call with a potential employer and it was okay, but awkward at the same time. On top of that, calling a Dane can be a challenge for me, as I have no chance of knowing whether or not the person speaks some awkward dialect or if it will be difficult for me to understand the person for other reasons. And nobody likes to ask if the other person could repeat what he/she has said again and again. However, this is one of the reasons why it is essential for you as a foreigner to actually learn and practice the language as much as possible. You can always make mistakes but practice makes perfect!

Generally, if you want a job, you'll have to go beyond your comfort zone a few times. I am having a hard time talking to others and trying to find friends in general. However, if you want to have better chances of getting a job, you need a bigger network, which is why you need to be in contact with many people. Getting a job is like trying to sell yourself on a market on which you'll only be "bought" if you are visible. I'm going to try and see which of these tips I can use myself and will keep you up to date on progress that I make. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to write them down in the comment section below. I'll try to answer any questions according to my knowledge.

....because it's tradition (wedding edition)....weil es Tradition ist (Hochzeitsedition)....

So weit, so gut.

When you are preparing everything for your wedding, you will most likely notice just how many traditions are involved in the ceremony. These traditions are different in each country and being only 4 hours away from home (Hamburg) is enough for a whole different set of traditions.

In Germany, you can choose to get married in church, but you can only "officially" get married in a registry office, which you will do in advance. In Denmark, it's either the one or the other, not both. Once you know where you want to be married and this can be more challenging in Denmark, because you need to have some sort of "connection" to the church you want to be married in, like for example a sibling who has been baptized in the same church, the rest is pretty similar. The husband to be is not allowed to see his bride in the last night before the wedding, he must not see her dress, he is supposed to buy the bridal bouquet, etc. etc. Both countries take over new things from the US, such as bridal showers, but then, we'll come to the more interesting part:

A bit ahead of the wedding, Danes will have their "Polterabend", which is a German word for an evening before the wedding, were we are having a party with our soon to be guests and were we throw porcelain on the floor for good luck. But in Denmark, the "Polterabend" is the hen/stag night, which is called "Junggesellen/Junggesellinnenabschied" in German. I know, I find it super confusing as well.

And then soon, the bride will make her way down the aisle in her pretty white dress for the first time in her......wait, what? It's not the first time in the life of a Danish girl, walking down the aisle in a white dress. For their confirmation, Danish girls become "mini-brides", while it's tradition to be dressed in black in Germany. The wedding ceremony in itself does not differ significantly from the ceremony in a - lutheran - German church, but it's possible that your Danish pastor may be a bit more conservative and will not allow you to kiss and will not allow any kind of camera during the service. Let's see how that will turn out for us.

Once the ceremony is over, you'll be on your way to the party. You can expect the usual wedding cake, gift table, drinks, good food, but don't expect your German "wedding soup" to show up. Your dinner may be interrupted by funny games and little plays by your best friends in Germany, but in Denmark, your family will make sure to write some songs for you and about you as a couple that you all will have to sing together.

Then you'll move on to the dance floor, but what's that old song they are playing? It can't be the favorite song of the bride and groom can it? No, it's the "brudevalsen" a traditional opening song even the royals dance to. Here you can see Crown Prince Frederik and his Mary dancing to the song:

Rumor has it that every Danish couple MUST dance to this with no exception.

If the music should be too loud and the bride or groom is in dire need of some peace and quiet, they may want to retreat to the restrooms for a bit. However, once one of them walks out and leaves the other one behind, this is THE chance for all guests from the other gender - you may now kiss the bride/groom! Rumor has it that some guests may change their gender in a matter of seconds in order to place a smooch on the unsuspecting groom's forehead.

The music you are listening to will most likely be played by a band, however, there are more and more DJ's to be found at Danish weddings. But I can tell you that your feet will be equally tired regardless of if you attend a Danish or a German wedding! I've tried that out for you earlier ;-)

Marry me, baby!

  • Viele Bräute basteln in letzter Zeit selbst.

The place of our engagement at Hardangerfjord on the 18th of July, 2011 in Lussand, Norway

The time has come. Frederik and I are finally getting married. We are getting married on the 22.7. in a little church by the Baltic Sea and the celebrations will also take place by the Baltic Sea, but in a hotel. We didn't choose a theme or specific colors yet, but some elements will reoccur throughout the day. By now, i am only done with picking my dress, and we have a location and the invitations are done.

The invitations are very beautiful and have been designed by graphic designer I know. He will also help me with other surprises (that I'll write about later so as to not spoil the surprise to any of the guests). We did save up for the wedding (I have been saving up for it in forever by now), but will still try to keep the costs down, as we both are recent graduates, who are not yet employed by anyone. This is one of the reasons, why I believe that some tips and tricks from a bride to be might be important for other future brides. Therefore, I'd like to share some of the best tips and tricks I can come up with:

  • You lack money in order to buy a very large cake? There is not enough money for all the bits and pieces that other brides have chosen for their wedding? Ask your network! You'll be amazed just how many people you know that are able to help with things such as choosing a location, baking a cake or designing decorations and invitations together with you. It is fun to work together and you can also promote some of your friend's and families' work to others that may be at the wedding. It's also great fun to be able to see this as some sort of a group project.
  • Bridal Dress Outlets - unless you have that one special dress that you have always dreamed of, this is a good way to save large amounts of money. My bridal dress did not even cost half of its original price, yet it is still amazing. And nobody will be able to tell which season the dress was made for anyway.
  • Make your own invitations and decorations! As previously mentioned, this is a way to save money and many brides engage in creating beautiful pieces of art for their wedding that will give the celebrations the perfect personal touch. Since I have two left hands when it comes to crafts, I didn't choose to do anything myself though.
  • Don't let "experts" tell you what a "must-have" is. Really, nothing is a must-have, unless you really want it. Weddings have a whole industry wrapped around them, like most other things in life. People are trying to make money and not everyone will tell you the truth. Some photographers, just an example, will pressure you into thinking that your pictures wont be worth it, if they aren't professional. That is not entirely true, especially not if you lack the money, but have connections to people with digital cameras and/or graphic designers, who know a thing or two about working with photographs. This is a legitimate way to save money, no matter what "experts" are trying to tell you. Spend your money on what it is important to you as a couple
  • It's very possible to save money with respect to the location. The rule of thumb here: the more you do yourself, the cheaper it gets. However, this was not an option for us, as we are not willing to spend our day worrying about if everything works out the way it should, thus, we opted for a tailored offer, but for a relatively unexpensive one. Check different locations and see if you can get a discount. Don't be afraid to ask, most people are very reasonable, they need you as a customer.
  • And last but not least, my best tip: Enjoy the day! Let people help you, but don't let anyone tell you what to do. It is your special day after all!
For the future, I hope that I will be able to post a bit more. The last two years have been rather exhausting from a personal perspective.
